CARBOHYDRATES

SIMPLE VS COMPLEX

Carbohydrates can be confusing to many, simply put there are simple and complex carbohydrates. Before differentiating between the two, how does the body use carbohydrates? They are your body's first source of energy and are broken down into simple sugars which are absorbed into the bloodstream. Insulin then comes into the picture and moves it from the blood into cells, which is where the sugar is used for energy.

Simple Carbs

Simple carbohydrates are digested quickly and provide a quick burst of glucose, energy, into the bloodstream. Simple carbs are also broken down into two categories; added or naturally occurring.

Added sugars do provide the body with calories, however lack nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, or fiber. Naturally occurring sugar can be found in foods such as dairy or fruits. Since they are natural nutrients are provided.

- Soda

- Candy

- Honey

Complex Carbs

Complex carbohydrates are digested at a slower pace, and provides a slower release of glucose into the bloodstream. Compared to a simple carb such as a candy bar, complex carbs such as whole wheat bread take longer to digest meaning feeling full longer. This means more energy over a longer period of time.

- Whole grain: rice, pasta, bread

- Sweet potato

While both simple and complex carbs can be part of a balanced diet, it is best to limit simple carbs and look to focus on a variety of complex carb sources such as fruits, whole grains, legumes, peas, etc.
